Holston Hills

Founded in 1925 along the Holston River, the especially lovely small river that helps form Tennessee, Holston Hills was one of Knoxville’s first automobile-oriented subdivisions. Most of its houses are pretty, several featuring unusual stonework, but otherwise conservative for the era. One major exception is the 1943 house at 4215 Holston Hills Drive, designed by German-born Bauhaus alumnus Alfred Clauss, the first modernist architect to do substantial work in Knoxville.

Holston hills boast a couple of features Sequoyah Hills lacks its own country club, with 1927 clubhouse, and a riverside golf course–designed by Scottish-born golfing guru Donald Ross, and often listed as one of America’s “classic” courses.
